P&P — Dark theme options (proposal, 2026-07-20)

Dark theme — three candidate palettes

Proposal only (live dark theme untouched). Each column renders the app's real surfaces — sidebar, a chat answer card, a user bubble, a wallet summary row, and both button styles — under a full candidate token set, with measured WCAG ratios underneath.

Adversarial audit of the CURRENT dark theme (measured):

Elevation is nearly flat: canvas #101820 vs card surface #16212c is 1.10:1, surface vs raised surface-2 is 1.12:1 — cards only exist because of 9%-alpha hairlines and heavy 45%-black shadows, which reads muddy, not elevated. Linear/Vercel hold ≥1.2:1 between steps plus a top-edge inset highlight.
Temperature clash: the light theme is warm cream (#faf8f1), but dark flips to a cold blue slate — warm cream text (#f2ede3/#cfc9bb) sits on cool blue surfaces, which is where the "muddy" feel comes from. Claude.ai keeps its dark warm for exactly this reason.
The brand navy disappears: --brand #142343 is 1.15:1 against the dark canvas — brand fills (chat avatar, primary chips) go nearly invisible in dark mode.
Brand gold goes olive: --accent #c79a3b is kept identical in both themes; on dark surfaces it reads dull olive (6.3:1 as a fill is fine, but it has no luminosity lift — Stripe/Linear brighten accents ~10-15% for dark).
Shadow-only depth: 0 10px 34px rgba(0,0,0,.45) on an already-dark canvas produces halos, not lift; no inset top-edge light. Cheap-looking under any bright element.
What's already good: text tokens are genuinely strong (13.97 / 9.88 / 7.39 / 5.19:1 — all AA+, t1–t3 AAA); --good-text and --accent-text per-theme splits are best practice. The problem is the surfaces, not the type.
